Battery Swapping for Electric 2&3 Wheelers

The vehicular landscape of India is undergoing a transformative shift. With a significant portion of the Indian market dominated by two and three-wheelers, the introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) in this segment presents an opportunity for sweeping change. Central to this transformation is the innovative concept of battery swapping.

Historical data suggests that India will witness the sale of approximately 200 million two and three-wheelers in the coming decade. Astonishingly, 40% of these are projected to be EVs. Within this EV segment, battery swapping is anticipated to gain significant traction.

While consumer buying behaviour is witnessing a change to a more phy-gital reality, the financials of buying an EV is still keeping consumers mildly at bay which is easily bridged by decoupling of the use in a battery swapping scenario. With battery swapping, the solution becomes more modular where consumers can get more power of choice and not get bundled with a battery. From a financial perspective, battery swapping facilitates a drastic reduction in the upfront cost of the vehicle as battery contributes ~40% to the vehicle cost and with a pay-as-you-go model in a 1-minute swap scenario, the consumer experience if further enhanced from the current refuelling options.

Increasement in Last-mile Delivery Sector

The last-mile delivery sector, with its ceaseless operations, is poised to be the pioneering force behind the adoption of battery swapping. However, this trend is not just confined to delivery vehicles. A shift towards hyperlocal adoption is on the horizon, with local businesses such as kirana stores, pharmacies, and courier services likely to join the fray. For the regular consumer, whose daily commute averages around 25 km, the prospect of conveniently located battery swapping stations can redefine the very essence of mobility.

Efforts are being channelled to embrace advanced battery technologies, which can sustain the unique climatic conditions in India with superior thermal stability.   In a value centric Indian market, where offerings like reduced premium charges of their vehicles if the kilometre running is low, a battery life spanning over 10 years, will tickle value propositions of subscribing rather than owning. With the assurance of AIS 156 phase 2 guidelines, these efforts will continually elevate the design and performance of both the battery and more offerings for the consumers.

Partnerships form the backbone of innovation. Engagements with industry-leading OEMs aim to produce stable, certified products that align seamlessly with evolving regulations. The vision encompasses the introduction of over 0.5 million such certified vehicles in the subsequent five years, catering to a diverse clientele spanning both B2C and B2B segments.

India’s EV Journey

As India embarks on its EV journey, it finds itself in the early stages of adoption, which could be a hidden blessing. This initial phase allows for meticulous planning and fortification of the digital infrastructure against potential threats. While achieving an entirely secure digital ecosystem is a daunting task, armed with state-of-the-art tools, top-tier talent, and artificial intelligence, the industry remains confident in its ability to mitigate cyber risks. It’s pertinent to note that current evaluations suggest that cyber vulnerabilities in charging stations are unlikely to compromise the wider power grid or the security of individual vehicles.

India’s e-2&3 wheeler segment stands at the cusp of a green revolution, with battery swapping acting as the linchpin. By marrying technological advancements with strategic investments and robust security measures, the stage is set for a sustainable future in urban mobility. The wheels are in motion, and the road ahead gleams with promise.
