EV batteries may soon be repairable or rebuilt (2)

EV batteries degrade, it’s a fact. Replacement costs are a major concern for owners. But what if they could be repaired instead? New advancements are making that possibility a reality.

As electric vehicles surge in popularity, driven by cost savings and advanced batteries, a critical challenge emerges: battery degradation. While designed for longevity, EV batteries inevitably lose performance over time. Unlike traditional cars, their complex nature repairs or rebuilding is a specialized, and often costly, endeavour.

Electric vehicle batteries are built to last for years, degradation over time due to factors like temperature variations, usage, and physical wear proves to be an issue. This results in a decline in overall performance, reducing the range and efficiency of the electric vehicle.

Unlike traditional ICE vehicles, where damaged components can be repaired or rebuilt individually, EV batteries are more complex and require special skills and expertise to fix.

EV batteries are significantly expensive because they are made from rare and costly materials and require precious manufacturing techniques. Even minor damages can make them non-repairable, resulting in costly replacements.

So, replacing an entire EV battery pack can be both significantly expensive and environmentally challenging. This high cost of replacement proves to be a significant challenge, particularly for EV owners in developing markets like India.

This is where the repair of electric batteries comes into the picture and becomes a viable solution. According to an article by HonestJohn.co.uk, we may soon be able to repair or rebuild an EV battery pack, similar to an ICE engine or starter motor.

According to HonestJohn.co.uk, the landscape of EV battery repair is gradually evolving globally.

They also stated that some insurers are taking proactive steps by developing training programs to increase the number of battery repair specialists and collaborating with recyclers where repairs aren’t feasible.

This can help lower EV repair costs as well as insurance premiums.

Additionally, as more EV performance and repair data becomes available, insurers can make better-informed decisions.

Benefits of Repairing EV Batteries

1. Cost Savings:

Replacing an EV battery can be significantly expensive, whereas repairing batteries is relatively much more affordable, lowering the overall maintenance costs of EVs.

2. Sustainability:

Repairing batteries helps minimise waste as well as preserve resources, supporting the country’s sustainability goals and clean energy initiatives.

3. Extended Battery Life:

Proper maintenance and repairs can help extend the battery life further, postponing the need for replacements.

4. Reduced Downtime:

Battery repairs are usually faster than battery replacements, ensuring reduced downtime.

A Work in Progress Towards Advancement

A Repairable battery pack can be expected to be more expensive than current configurations at first, but rapid advancements in this area are anticipated as well.

Apart from being more expensive, repairable battery packs may feature a different design or configuration with easily accessible sub-assemblies for servicing or replacement. However, this type of configuration might reduce efficiency and negatively affect range, though the potential advantages of easy repairability cannot be ignored.

Even though the concept of repairable batteries is optimistic, we’re not quite there yet. Hopefully, shortly, EV owners will be able to rebuild an EV battery module from their local auto parts store and get it repaired just like traditional ICE components.
