Samsung has unveiled a new battery that offers up to 600 miles (965 km) of range with just a 9-minute charge.
Revealed at the Seoul SNE Battery Day 2024 expo, this battery is part of Samsung’s pilot run for solid-state battery production, aiming for mass production by 2027.
Since late 2023, EV manufacturers have tested this battery, and feedback has been positive.
Samsung’s New EV Battery- Design and Features
This new solid-state battery is lighter, smaller, and safer than traditional lithium-ion batteries. It enhances safety by using solid components instead of liquid ones and takes up less space, making it more efficient.
Samsung plans to offer these batteries in the super-premium EV segment due to their higher cost. Additionally, Samsung will release high-nickel NCS products for the high-end market, with an energy density of 500Wh/kg, significantly higher than the current average of 270Wh/kg.
Impressive Charging Capabilities- 9 Min Charge
Samsung’s new battery can reach a substantial range with just a 9-minute charge. This likely refers to quick charging from 20% to 80%, which could mean the battery’s total range exceeds 965 km (600 miles).
This capability represents a major advancement in reducing EV charging times.
Future Developments
Samsung is also developing more affordable battery options, such as lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and cobalt-free batteries.
These initiatives demonstrate Samsung’s commitment to enhancing EV technology across different market segments.
The 20-year lifespan of the new solid-state battery further underscores its potential to transform the EV market, providing long-term reliability and performance.
Summary
Samsung’s latest EV battery technology marks a significant leap forward.
With its impressive range, quick charging, and enhanced safety features, this innovation could positively impact the EV market, making electric vehicles more appealing and practical for a wider audience.
