Ola Electric Gen 3 EV & Ola S2 Scooter Launch: All You Need to Know

Share

Ola Electric unveiled its brand new Gen 3 EV platform for its upcoming range of electric scooters earlier in August this year. This new platform will now reportedly be making its launch sooner.

It has been reported that Ola will start delivering its new electric scooters based on the Gen 3 platform from January next year. Originally, it was anticipated to be available by March 2025. However, it appears that Ola has postponed its plans to January 2025.

Ola Electric confirmed the news that they will start delivering the S1 Gen 3 scooters ahead of schedule in its recent quarterly report.

Ola Electric’s Gen 3 EV

The Gen 3 platform is being designed to improve the efficiency, performance, and reliability of the brand’s EV range.

In addition to employing advanced technology to enhance the performance of its upcoming scooters, Ola has also assured that the new generation would be cost-effective.

The new Gen 3 platform comprises 3 major components- the battery pack, the motor, and the integrated control modules.

Gen 3 EV Integrated platform

Ola Electric has revealed its approach for the new generation platform, termed ‘Inside the Box’. The brand has integrated the motor, battery, and electronics into a single box unit for the Gen 3.

That box is then integrated with the scooter’s chassis. An aluminum frame will also be built around the battery which will make it a stressed member.

This integration contributes to enhancing the structure, stability, and balance of the platform. It also optimizes the structure and makes its powertrain more compact and efficient since the space between these important components becomes reduced.

This design not only maximizes space but also contributes in improving both the performance and efficiency of the scooters as well as in decreasing the overall vehicle weight.

Ola Gen 3 EV Platforms

In the Gen 3 platform, the core functions of the BMS (Battery Management System), MCU (Motor Control Unit), and other components will be merged into a single multi-core processor.

Additionally, it will incorporate a new computing board i.e. a motherboard of sorts to house all the ECUs in one place.

This significant advancement facilitates efficient wireless data communication whilst reducing wire complexity. The EV system would also have the capability to integrate Ola’s Krutrim A.l. in the future and shall also include advanced safety features such as ADAS.

Gen 3 Battery Pack and Cells

The Gen 3 battery pack will be an integral part of the structure and will be connected to the front and rear subframes of the electric scooter. This will help to enhance shock resistance and build strength and thermal efficiency.

The Gen 3 battery pack will make use of Ola’s brand new 4680 Bharat Cell whereby 4680 refers to an individual cell’s diameter of 46 mm and height of 80 mm.

These cells would have a higher energy density and are likely to improve energy density and fast charging capabilities.

Ola’s In-house Developed Battery

These new cells, according to the brand, are stated to be developed entirely in India.

Ola Electric’s Founder and MD, Bhavish Aggarwal had previously revealed that the EV maker is currently developing lithium-ion cells at its Gigafactory in Tamil Nadu and these in-house developed battery cells shall be used in the Gen 3 platform.

New Gen 3 Powered Scooter Range

While the exact details of the range and performance have not been revealed, the modified structure of the Gen 3 will help increase the current range and shorten the charging period of the upcoming electric scooters.

The brand anticipates that the Gen 3 platform will play an important role by offering an increase of 26% performance-wise and a 22.5% cost reduction over the previous gen models.

Ola’s Foundation For Future

The brand further states that the Gen 3 platform will be versatile and will lead to the launch of a diverse range of scooters. It is being built to become the foundation of their future range as it will form the basis of the upcoming line of electric scooters.

The new Gen 3 is designed to be futuristic, offering more power, range, performance, and efficiency compared to existing platforms.

Ola Electric’s S2 and S3 Series

At its annual “Sankalp 2024” event, Ola Electric announced to launch of three scooters under the S2 brand whilst the S3 brand will cater to premium customers with two luxurious maxi-scooters.

The S2 lineup will introduce three new models, categorized as City, Tourer, and Sports scooters, designed to offer a range of options for urban commuters and long-distance riders alike.

On the other hand, the S3 sub-brand will focus on more premium offerings with two maxi-scooters, dubbed the Grand Adventure and Grand Tourer, which are expected to provide luxury and performance in a single package.

This new platform will enable them to build this whole new premium range as well as a lineup consisting of a commuter, sporty as well as a touring scooter based on the Gen 3 platform, apart from the S1 range.
