Looking ahead, Kia plans to release more affordable EVs, with one of the first in line being the Sonet EV, which was recently spotted testing in India. This move is part of Kia’s strategy to enter the mass-market EV space, offering electric vehicles at different price points.
The proportions and silhouette appear similar to the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) Sonet. Still, the EV version may feature subtle design tweaks, such as rear bumper changes to highlight its electric nature. The 16-inch alloy wheels found on the ICE Sonet are likely to be carried over to the electric version as well.
The Sonet EV could come with some distinct features, including a new EV-specific grille, low-resistance tires, and potentially fresh color options to differentiate it from its ICE counterpart.
Inside, the cabin may see slight modifications, including updates to the infotainment system for EV-specific features. Kia is also likely to retain popular features from the ICE model, like the 10.2-inch touchscreen, Bose speakers, ventilated front seats, and Level-1 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).
The estimated driving range is over 450 km on a single charge, making it a strong competitor to vehicles like the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400.
Standard and long versions of the Sonet EV may be available, offering different range capabilities to suit varying needs.
| Feature | Specification |
|---|---|
| Battery Pack | 40-45 kWh (expected) |
| Motor | Front-axle mounted |
| Range (single charge) | 450 km+ (expected) |
| Platform | Heavily modified K1 |
| Expected Launch | Mid-2025 |
While the final pricing for the Kia Sonet EV is still unknown, it is speculated to fall within the ₹15 lakh to ₹20 lakh range. This would make it one of Kia’s most affordable EVs. To provide context, the current Kia Sonet ICE model starts at ₹8 lakh.
The production version of the Sonet EV is expected to debut by mid-2025, placing Kia firmly in the competitive electric SUV market.
The vehicle will compete with well-established models like the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400, but Kia’s reputation for reliability and innovation will help it stand out. The Sonet EV will mark Kia’s entry into the affordable EV space, as the brand looks to offer electric vehicles at a more accessible price point.
