India’s electric four-wheeler (E4W) segment continued its steady expansion in June 2025, building on its growth trajectory with increasing retail activity and strong year-over-year gains across multiple OEMs.
The month also witnessed sharper competition among leading players, notably Mahindra, MG, and Hyundai, as market dynamics continue to shift.
According to data from the Vahan Dashboard, electric car retail sales stood at 13,004 units in June 2025, reflecting a robust YoY growth of 59.4% compared to June 2024.
While this indicates healthy long-term momentum, the month-over-month (MoM) growth stood at just 5.7%, rising from 12,302 units in May 2025.
Despite a modest month-over-month improvement, key OEMs recorded contrasting performances, with some surging ahead while others experienced slight declines.
Tata Motors maintained its lead in June 2025, followed closely by MG Motor India and a fast-rising Mahindra & Mahindra, which continued to gain momentum for the third consecutive month.
Tata Motors topped the leaderboard with 4,664 units, narrowly ahead of MG Motor India, which registered 3,945 units. Mahindra remained in third with a strong showing of 2,979 units, while Hyundai and BYD India secured the fourth and fifth spots with 509 and 461 units, respectively.
Among luxury OEMs, BMW India led the segment with 212 units, followed by Mercedes-Benz with 91 units and Volvo Auto India with 22 units.
The top three EV makers—Tata Motors, MG Motor India, and Mahindra—accounted for a commanding 88% of the total E4W market share in June 2025.
This reflects continued concentration at the top, leaving a limited playing field for mid-size and emerging OEMs.
While Tata Motors remained the market leader, the competition from MG and Mahindra is visibly intensifying with each passing month.

Tata Motors held on to its leadership in June with 4,664 units, up marginally from 4,599 in May, representing 1% MoM growth.
Every year, the company saw a 2% increase from 4,590 units in June 2024.
The Nexon EV and Tiago EV remained the brand’s volume drivers, though the brand’s share is now under pressure from fast-growing competitors. Tata’s market share for the month stood at 35.8%.
MG Motor India continued to close the gap with Tata, registering 3,945 units in June 2025.
However, this represented a 3% MoM dip from 4,054 units sold in May.
Despite this minor drop, the company posted a strong 167% YoY growth, up from 1,476 units in June 2024, driven by solid demand for the MG ZS EV and Comet EV. The brand captured a 30.3% market share.
Mahindra showcased another impressive month, reporting 2,979 units, a 5% increase over May’s 2,833 units.
With a 512% YoY jump, the brand continues to surge, largely due to the strong market response to the XUV400 and its new BE-series EVs. Mahindra held a market share of 22.9%, reflecting its rising influence in the Indian E4W segment.

Still, the brand showed a massive YoY growth of 708%, up from just 63 units a year ago.
The Ioniq 5 and Kona Electric continue to see steady adoption, and future launches may support Hyundai’s volumes in H2 2025.
BYD reported 461 units in June 2025, down 11% from 516 in May.
Every year, the company improved by 90% YoY, up from 243 units in June 2024.
Its consistent mid-size segment presence keeps it in the top five, though monthly sales volatility remains a concern.
BMW led the premium segment with 212 units, a 15% increase from May and a 272% YoY growth. Mercedes-Benz followed with 91 units, while Volvo’s numbers declined to 22. Audi saw only 2 units sold in June.
Overall, the luxury EV market remains niche but continues to grow steadily.
June 2025 marked another month of consolidation and strategic competition in India’s electric four-wheeler segment.
Tata Motors remained in the lead, but both MG and Mahindra are closing in, reshaping the leaderboard.
Tata’s market share now stands below 36%, down from over 60% a year ago, reflecting the growing strength of rivals. MG and Mahindra together account for more than half of the non-Tata volumes, with consistent double- and triple-digit YoY growth.
As customer preferences evolve and new product lines hit the market in H2 2025, the Indian E4W space is likely to see more disruption, innovation, and new market leaders emerging in the quarters ahead.
