Electric four-wheelers recorded 11,231 units of retail sales and a YoY growth of 32% in January 2025, according to Vahan Data. Notably, the new month brought a significant increase in sales, marking a strong month for major EV manufacturers.
Tata Motors, the longstanding electric 4W leader, continued to dominate the market in January and maintained market leadership, followed by MG Motors and Mahindra.

Tata Motors and MG Motors dominated the Indian Electric 4W segment with a combined market share of almost 65% in January 2025. Both Hyundai India and Citroen experienced significant growth with exceptional MoM growth.
Mahindra and BYD India also emerged as growing players with positive MoM growth, whilst Mercedes Benz and Kia India experienced a decline, with negative MoM growth.
The overall increase in MoM sales across major brands suggests signs of strong market expansion or a shift in consumer preference to electric mobility.
Tata Motors continues to maintain its first position in the electric four-wheeler market leader board in January 2025 as well. The company reported increased retail sales, with sales figures rising to 5,037 units compared to 4,165 units in December
.This increase resulted in a month-over-month growth rate of 20.93% and a substantial market share of 34.51%.
MG Motors failed to surpass Tata Motors this month but surely is going to catch up soon. It retained its second position on the leaderboard in January 2025.
The company sold 4,225 electric four-wheelers, an increase from the 3,781 units sold in December 2024. Its month-on-month growth stands at 11.74%, with a market share of 30.01%.
Mahindra and Mahindra continue to maintain their third spot on the leaderboard in January 2025.
The company sold 686 electric vehicles in January 2025, which is a substantial increase from the 392 units sold in December 2024.
Mahindra recorded an impressive month-on-month growth of 75.00% and now holds a market share of 4.04%.
BYD maintained the fourth spot in the leaderboard with a sales figure of 312 units in January 2025.
The company had a slight rise from the 304 units sold in December, reflecting a 2.63% month-on-month growth. BYD India Pvt Ltd now holds a 2.31% market share.
Citroen, jumped up to the fifth position in the leaderboard this month. It reported sales of 269 units in January 2025, a substantial increase from the 78 units sold in December 2024.
This represents an impressive month-on-month growth of 244.87% and its market share currently stands at 1.30%.
The electric four-wheeler market witnessed a change in dynamics as well as conflict in January 2025, with Tata Motors’s market share falling to 34.51%, whilst MG Motors battled closely behind at 30.01%.
Despite Tata’s dominance in the segment, its overall sales figures and market share have recently fallen. It dropped from a high per cent to below 40% this month.
This indicates increasing competition from competitors like MG Motors, Mahindra, BYD, Citroen, Hyundai, etc whose consistently improving sales figures hint at a potentially tighter conflict in the upcoming year.
