Observations

April 2025 turned out to be an electrifying month for the Electric four-wheeler industry with the overall retail sales of electric two-wheelers witnessing a significant surge in the country.

MG Motors, Mahindra and Mahindra, Hyundai Motors and BYD- most of the Top Five Electric Four-Wheeler Manufacturers dominated the Indian E4W segment in April 2025, experiencing significant growth with an exceptional YoY growth rate.

Tata Motors, while retaining its market leadership, experienced a fall in monthly sales as well as market share, reflecting intensifying competition in the segment.

Meanwhile, brands like Mercedes Benz, PCA, Volvo, etc experienced an overall YoY decline, indicating the need to strengthen their brand presence in the country.

The overall decrease in MoM sales across major brands reflects the usual market-wide slowdown following the financial year-end in March.

Meanwhile, the overall increase in YoY sales across major brands suggests signs of strong market expansion or a shift in consumer preference to electric mobility.

Final Thoughts

The Sales data for Electric Four-Wheelers this month reflects a competitive and evolving market in the country.

The electric four-wheeler market witnessed a change in dynamics and conflict in April 2025, with Tata Motors’s market share falling to 36%, while MG Motors battled closely to claim market leadership at 28%.

Despite Tata’s longstanding dominance in the segment, its overall sales figures and market share have recently dropped, falling from a high of 61% to below 40% this April.

This shift indicates increasing competition from other competitors like JSW MG Motors, Mahindra and Mahindra, BYD, Citroen, Hyundai, etc whose consistently improving sales figures hint at a potentially tighter conflict in the coming months.

It will be important to observe how market dynamics shift, how the emerging players will challenge the existing landscape, and how it will influence the future of electric mobility in the country.

While Tata Motors continues to hold the top position in April 2025, its falling market share and fierce competition from others highlight an evolving E4W market.

As the financial year advances, the E4W sales are expected to rise further and contribute significantly to the growth of electric mobility in 2025 in India.
