Tesla Battery Storage Factory in India
Tesla, the US-based electric vehicle maker, has proposed building a Tesla battery storage factory in India. The proposal said that they plan to produce the “Powerwall”, a system that can draw power from the solar panels or the grid and store the energy from them to give a power backup to the spaces at night or during a power outage. This sleek unit measures around a meter and can be kept in houses or garages. However, the news is still not officially reported yet!
Tesla’s Ambitions for Indian Market
The battery storage factory would help Tesla tap into the growing demand for clean energy solutions in India, which has been expanding its electricity access but still struggles with power shortages and pollution. Last year, India had its worst electricity crisis as electricity generation suffered due to the lack of coal transportation. And as the department lacked to add coal and hydropower to the electricity capacity, there were night-time power cuts throughout the country.
In proposing this, it seems like Tesla wants to contribute to the country’s plans to increase non-fossil fuel power capacity from 186 GW to 500 GW by 2030.
However, as Tesla sought various incentives to set up the battery factory, it was very clearly conveyed by the Indian officials that they could not offer any incentives. However, to make it fair for the company, the Indian official said they’ll create a process to provide subsidies to people who purchase it.

Tesla Powerwall
The current Tesla Powerwall, a wall-mounted battery system, can store up to 13.5 kWh of energy and provide backup power during blackouts or peak hours. It is also paired with solar panels to generate and store renewable energy. Tesla claims that Powerwall can reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower electricity bills.
Tesla has not commented on the report yet. It is unclear if the proposal will be approved or when the factory will be operational. Tesla currently has battery factories in Nevada, New York and Shanghai and is building more in Berlin and Texas.
Meeting with Indian Commerce Minister
Apart from proposing the factory to build the powerwalls, the company also had a closed-door meeting with India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal in August about setting up an electric vehicle factory in India, overseen by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. In this plan, Tesla said they aim to produce electric cars priced around $24,000 in Indian value, which is 19,74,420 rupees. Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, tried to express his interest in entering the Indian market, but previously, he faced some regulatory hurdles, including the high import duties on electric vehicles.
However, seems like, Tesla is trying to enter the Indian Market through different channels.
