CATL's Shenxing V2 Battery: 800km Range, 5-Minute Charge

Shanghai, April 23, 2025 — Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) unveiled its groundbreaking Shenxing V2 battery at a pre-show event for the Shanghai Auto Show on Monday, setting a new benchmark in electric vehicle (EV) technology.

The second-generation Shenxing battery promises an impressive 520 kilometers (323 miles) of range from just five minutes of charging, surpassing rival BYD’s system, which offers 400 kilometers in a similar timeframe.

CATL launched 3 game-changing battery technologies including an LFP pack that charges at 12C, 1.3MW speeds, a sodium-ion battery packing 175Wh/kg energy density, and a Dual-Power dual-chemistry battery offering up to 1500km of range.

A Leap in Superfast EV Charging

The Shenxing V2 is fully compatible with the latest superfast charging stations, enabling EV drivers to achieve significant range in minimal time. “Superfast charging will become the standard for electric vehicles,” a CATL executive stated at the unveiling, emphasizing the company’s commitment to pushing technological boundaries.

This advancement addresses one of the primary barriers to EV adoption: range anxiety.

By delivering 520 kilometers of range in five minutes, CATL’s Shenxing V2 outperforms BYD’s fast-charging system, positioning CATL as a leader in the competitive EV battery market.

Beyond Shenxing V2: Sodium-Ion and Dual-Power Innovations

CATL’s announcements in Shanghai extended beyond the Shenxing V2.

The company introduced a sodium-ion battery designed for extreme conditions, capable of operating at temperatures as low as -40°C. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion technology is more fire-resistant, safer, and cheaper due to the stability and abundance of sodium.

CATL projects that sodium-ion batteries could capture up to 50% of the market share currently dominated by lithium iron phosphate batteries.

Additionally, CATL unveiled a dual-power battery system combining a fast-charging battery with an auxiliary pack, offering an extraordinary 1,500 kilometers of range.

This innovation caters to long-distance drivers and further showcases CATL’s rapid pace of development in a fiercely competitive domestic market.

Competitive Landscape and Market Implications

The unveiling underscores the intense competition among Chinese battery and EV manufacturers.

CATL’s executive noted that while the race for innovation drives progress, aggressive price competition could harm the industry by allowing lower-quality products to persist. CATL aims to set a high standard to elevate the market and phase out subpar technologies.

Meanwhile, BYD is not standing still. The company recently announced plans to enter the Japanese market with a mini-car tailored to Japan’s narrow roads and stringent safety standards by 2026.

This move challenges Japanese automakers already grappling with declining global market shares, production cuts, and looming U.S. tariffs. BYD’s collaboration with Saudi Aramco to enhance new energy vehicle efficiency further signals its ambition to expand globally.

A Game-Changer for EV Adoption

CATL’s Shenxing V2, with its 800-kilometer total range potential and rapid charging capabilities, is poised to accelerate mass-market EV adoption.

By alleviating concerns about charging times and range limitations, CATL is paving the way for broader acceptance of electric vehicles worldwide. The company’s sodium-ion and dual-power innovations further demonstrate its multifaceted approach to dominating the battery market.

As the Shanghai Auto Show kicks off, CATL’s latest advancements send a clear message: the future of EVs is faster, safer, and more accessible than ever. With BYD and other competitors in close pursuit, the race to power the next generation of electric vehicles is heating up.
