Hydrogen Combustion Engine Technology

The future of transportation just got a lot greener with the unveiling of India’s first Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) technology solution for heavy-duty trucks. Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Ashok Leyland, with the support of other technical partners, have been tirelessly working on this cutting-edge technology since the last year, and the result of their hard work was showcased at the India Energy Week in Bengaluru, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the revolutionary vehicle.

H2-ICE Truck

The H2-ICE truck is a game-changer for the transportation industry, produced by Ashok Leyland the truck has the range of carrying 19-25 tonnes. It emits near zero emissions, delivering a performance that is on par with conventional diesel trucks, but with the added bonus of significantly reducing noise pollution. The first engines began running in early 2022, and since August of that year, the truck has been undergoing intensive tests to ensure its reliability and effectiveness.

Green hydrogen, which is produced from renewable energy sources like wind and solar, is the fuel that powers the H2-ICE truck. This not only reduces carbon emissions but also ensures that the truck operates sustainably and economically. The partnership between RIL and Ashok Leyland has been instrumental in bringing this technology to life, combining their expertise and resources to create a solution that will revolutionize the transportation industry.
