Tesla Gigafactory Texas
Before Tesla Gigafactory Texas was turned into the plant, it was previously a sand and gravel quarry operated by Martin Marrieta that looked like “2,000 acres of craters,” Richard Suttle, an attorney for the company, told Austin’s Water Oversight Committee in an August 2020 meeting. He said, “If you’ve ever seen what sand and gravel mining does to a piece of property, it makes it look like a moonscape.”
But what was so special about that place and location? Why did Telsa go for that place? What investment amount did Tesla invest to build the Tesla Giga Texas? What are the Tesla plans for the site? How did the construction of this place have an economic and environmental effect? Let’s uncover everything as we unfold answers to each question.
Tesla Gigafactory Texas, Location & Its Purpose
Tesla Gigafactory Texas, also known as Giga Texas, Giga Austin, or Gigafactory 5, is a state-of-the-art automotive manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas, built by Tesla. It is currently the second largest electric vehicle manufacturing facility after the Boeing Everett Factory in the world and is Tesla’s fifth Gigafactory.
The factory occupies a 2,500-acre plot of land at the Colorado River bank, equivalent to 1,600 football fields. It has a production floor space of over 10 million square feet, about the same size as 15 city blocks.
However, for Tela, finding the right place wasn’t easy. After considering several other locations across eight states in the central United States, Tesla selected Austin as the site for its fifth Gigafactory in July 2020. The project’s construction started in the same month, and it was an agile project that was completed in less than two years.
The factory’s grand opening took place on April 7, 2022, at the “Cyber Rodeo” event by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. While the unit was inaugurated, the factory started producing Model Y cars for the Eastern United States and completed the initial deliveries of the model. Besides, it is also working on equipment installation for Cybertruck production, which is expected to offer the initial deliveries of Cybertruck in 2023. Moreover, the factory will also be dedicated to producing Semi and other future Tesla vehicles.
Why did Tesla choose Texas as its plant location and announce it as its headquarters?
Tesla chose Texas as its new headquarters for several reasons, such as:
- Tesla in Texas has room to expand its operations and innovation to no limit, as Texas offers more flexibility and freedom where it offers a favourable tax and regulatory environment, low-cost labour, and lower land cost than other places.
- Texas has a lower cost of living and more affordable housing for Tesla employees compared to California.
- Texas has a large land area and a riverfront site for Tesla’s new Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, which makes it reachable and affordable for many people. Moreover, it also gives it proximity to major markets and suppliers and abundant renewable energy resources.
- Texas is closer to Elon Musk’s personal residence and his other companies, SpaceX and the Boring Company.
Investment Details Of Tesla Giga Texas
The initial construction costs of the factory are calculated to be around $1 billion, according to public filings. Tesla has also applied to expand its Gigafactory in Texas with a $775.7 million investment, as Giga Texas has huge production plans in place, according to government filings.
Moreover, it marked one of its most significant expansion drives by opening the $5.5 billion Gigafactory in Germany last year.
Over time, Tesla plans to invest over $10 billion in Gigafactory Texas, which will generate at least 20,000 direct and 100,000 indirect jobs.
The company has asked Travis County for an 80% rebate on its property taxes for a period of 10 years, worth $14.7 million, and a 65% rebate for the next ten years.
The central Texas county that includes Austin approved a plan to give Tesla Inc. millions in tax subsidies if it builds a $1.1 billion vehicle factory there. This further gave Tesla an advantage to make significant and huge room for growth.
Tesla also plans to create a public park and a wildlife habitat along the riverfront as part of its environmental and community initiatives.
Manufacturing Inside The Giga Texas
Tesla’s Gigafactory in Texas, which covers a vast area and has a manufacturing plant, primarily aims to produce electric vehicles and battery products essential for Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.
Model Y & Cybertruck Manufacturing
The factory is the manufacturing hub for the Model Y, which is a popular and affordable electric SUV, and the futuristic Electric Pickup Truck, Cybertruck.
The Model Y production began in late 2021, and the first deliveries took place at an opening party called “Cyber Rodeo” on April 7, 20223. As of September 2023, the first Tesla Cybertruck reached Giga, Texas, and will be officially out by the year’s end. Since the cybertruck opened its booking in November 2019 and has been in demand, it has over 1.9 million reservations and 5 years of ait time.
Tesla’s Next-Generation Vehicle Production
Since the Giga Texas is also a huge plant, they have more plans to utilise it. The Giga also has plans to be the main factory for Tesla’s next-generation vehicle, which is rumoured to be a compact car or a hatchback that will target the European and Asian markets. For this vehicle’s production, it is expected that production volumes will significantly surpass those of the Model 3/Y platform. Moreover, while the press has called it the Model 2 or the Model Q, as of June 2023, Tesla has revealed no official name for these hatchbacks.
These hatchback vehicles will be based on a new platform using Tesla’s new 4680 battery cells. These cells are equipped well to offer higher energy density, lower cost, and longer lifespan than the current cell the company is using. As Tesla has not revealed many details about this vehicle yet, we can still expect the details from the company in late 2023 or early 2024.
The Battery Cells Production
The Giga Factory Texas is the first Tesla factory to produce both vehicles and battery cells under one roof. This initiative by Tesla has made integration and efficiency in the supply chain much better and smoother.
In addition to vehicles, the Gigafactory Texas also produces battery cells and energy storage products, such as the Powerwall, Powerpack, and Megapack. These products can store excess solar energy or provide backup power during grid outages. The Gigafactory Texas is the first Tesla factory to produce vehicles and battery cells under one roof, allowing for greater integration and efficiency in the supply chain. The battery cell production at the Gigafactory Texas will also help Tesla reduce the cost of batteries to $100 per kilowatt-hour, which could result in mass adoption of electric vehicles.
The Gigafactory Texas is a manufacturing facility and a site of innovation and automation. Tesla is constantly developing new processes, equipment, and tooling to improve the quality and boost the speed of its production. The Gigafactory Texas also employs thousands of workers from diverse backgrounds and skill levels, offering them opportunities for training and career growth. Tesla aims to positively impact the local community and environment by supporting education, workforce development, and sustainability initiatives.
