Kia EV5 Compact Electric SUV
The Kia EV5 compact electric SUV has been unveiled by the South Korean manufacturer at the Chengdu Motor Show in China ahead of its market launch in that region before the end of the year.
Exterior
Specifications about dimensions and drivetrain will be revealed at the next Kia EV Day in October, but the brand has confirmed a total of 10 exterior finishes will be offered: Snow White Pearl, Clear White, Starry Night Black, Magma Red, Ivory Silver, Frost Blue, Iceberg Green, Tide Blue and Shale Grey.
Ivory Silver will also be available with a matte finish and will likely emulate the finish of the Concept EV5.
Design
The Kia EV5 gets a tall, boxy aesthetic with straighter lines and squared-off edges. It also incorporates ‘Signature Star Map Lighting’ LED daytime running lights, inspired by stellar constellations.
Cabin
The Kia EV5’s cabin design is inspired by the EV9 and flaunts “seamless harmony between nature and man-made elements”. It will be closer in concept and execution to a home lounge than a traditional car cabin.
Configurable LED ambient lighting will be available for cabin surfaces like the dashboard and door trims, with up to 64 color options and adjustable brightness. The mood lighting will be in sync with the vehicle’s drive modes, diming in low light conditions and subtly linking to the driver assistance alerts.
The cabin will be offered in four different finishes and five different seat patterns. These include two woven options as well as an artificial leather option for the base model.
It will also feature Kia’s connected car Navigation & Cockpit (ccNC) dual-screen array incorporating the driver’s cluster and touchscreen infotainment system.
Platform
The Kia EV5 will be based on a new platform designed for more affordability, rather than the E-GMP platform currently in use. It has still not been revealed if it’ll be a standalone architecture or a variation of the recently announced Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA).
It will be a lower voltage (400V) platform, suggesting that it won’t be able to have the same charging speeds as the EVs built on the E-GMP (800V) platform.
Battery
It could be available with the choice of either a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) or a nickel manganese cobalt (NCM) battery.
Launch Date
The Kia EV5 is part of the 14-strong range of all-electric models the brand plans to launch globally before 2027.
The Kia EV5 won’t be just built for the Chinese market, though it is primarily focused there. It will be produced in both left and right-hand drive for the world.
