Nio Battery Plant in China
While the Chinese EV manufacturer looks to reduce its dependency on suppliers like CATL, Nio wants to construct its first battery plant to produce large cylindrical cells comparable to those used by Tesla.
Capacity of Plant
The new plant will have an annual capacity to produce 40-gigawatt hours (GWh) of batteries, which can power about 400,000 units of long-range electric vehicles (EVs). According to them, it will be situated close to its primary manufacturing hub in Hefei, in the Anhui region of eastern China.
Nio’s founder and chairman, William Li, had previously stated that the company would begin producing 800-volt lithium-ion battery packs in the second half of 2024. This was part of a similar strategy to Tesla’s, in which the company intended to eventually use both internally produced and externally sourced batteries. He made no further mention of the specifics at the time.
CATL, Battery Supplier of NIO
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., also known as CATL, is currently Nio’s only supplier of car batteries and battery swapping stations. In Shanghai, Nio has a smaller battery-specific facility where it tests batteries. A request for comment from CATL was not immediately complied with.
