We all think that electric mobility is a monopoly of the automotive industry, however, BEL (Bharat Electronics Limited) has decided to produce Indigenously developed lithium-ion battery cells for electric vehicles. This announcement was made at a Defence Expo held in Gandhinagar.

About BEL
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is a government-owned Indian aerospace and defense electronics firm. Its primary business is the production of innovative electronic equipment for ground and aeronautical applications. BEL is one of nine PSUs under India’s Ministry of Defence.
The Government of India has designated it as a Navratna.
Why are Li-ion batteries important?
For e-Mobility, Li-ion is the main battery technology. Long cycle life Li-Ion LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate – LiFePO4) chemistry is a safer choice for EV applications.
Li-Ion cells are now imported into India for use in battery packs. BEL, in partnership with NSTL (DRDO), has gone into Li-Ion cell manufacture for Defense and e-Mobility applications to establish self-reliance in Li-Ion cell manufacturing.
What is the plan?
BEL has constructed a pilot plant for the research and manufacturing of Li-Ion prismatic cells. BEL has designed and realized three varieties of Li-Ion prismatic cells, namely 3.2V, 10 Ah / 25 Ah, using raw materials such as anode, cathode, electrolyte, solvents, binder, and so on. These cells’ intended uses include underwater, e-mobility, and remote power systems, among others.
The Future
The progress of such defense firms into the realm of electric vehicles is a sign that India is ready to adopt EVs. This action will encourage more new and established industries to enter the EV world.
